Great post over at The Forgotten Ways (Alan Hirsch): http://www.theforgottenways.org/blog/index.php/2007/04/06/jesus-is-the-way/trackback/
And then I come to that quintessential saying of Jesus in John 14:6 “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” And I realize afresh that this is exactly how I experience my connection with God—as a relationship mediated through my savior Jesus. This text is all about mediation; “I am the Way” describing Jesus in his mediatorial role between God and humanity; as the Truth he is the mediator of the revelation of God, and as the Life he is the mediator of the salvation which is life in God.
It always rings true for me when I hear people reference that verse in this tone, rather than in the (more frequently used) tone of:
“God is up there somewhere, and this dude Jesus is standing in the way between you and God, so you’ve gotta make it through him to get to God.”
For me, the concept makes more sense like this:
“God and man will be united in some way, some how, some time… and that that (re)union, whenever and however it happens, is somehow mediated by Jesus.”
I don’t know… maybe some of you will think the difference is subtle, but for me it’s been huge to think about it this way.
